Local shoppers of children’s apparel will have one less retail option following Gymboree Corp.’s decision to close its Hanes Mall store as part of its bankruptcy restructuring.
The San Francisco company listed six North Carolina stores among the 350 that will be being closed, mainly its Gymboree and Crazy 8 brands. That will leave it with about 950 stores.
Although the company didn’t say when the stores would be shut down, closing sales at affected stores begin Tuesday. It has hired Great American Group and Tiger Group to manage the closing sales. Additional sales information can be found at http://ift.tt/2s3vl8s.
It is keeping stores open at Four Seasons Town Center and Friendly Shopping Center in Greensboro, and its Tanger Factory outlet store in Mebane.
Gymboree filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection June 11.
“As part of our court-supervised restructuring process, the Gymboree Corp. is taking necessary steps to strengthen our company as a whole by closing certain Gymboree and Crazy 8 brand stores,” the company said in a statement.
Other Gymboree stores closing in North Carolina are in Charlotte, Greenville, Hickory, Raleigh and Wilmington. Crazy 8 stores are being closed in Cary, Greenville and Hickory.
The company said the affected stores were chosen “following a comprehensive evaluation of its retail footprint.”
“Right-sizing our store footprint is a central part of our efforts to ensure Gymboree emerges from this restructuring process as a stronger and more competitive organization, with greater financial flexibility to invest in our future,” Daniel Griesemer, the company’s president and chief executive, said in a statement.
“We will continue to operate a majority of our stores and will continue to deliver quality merchandise and superior service to our customers.”
Gymboree is the latest national retailer to retrench its store network in recent years.
Department stores making similar significant store closing announcements include Dillard’s, J.C. Penney, Macy’s and Sears.
Other prominent retailers either closing stores or going out of business include Abercrombie & Fitch, American Apparel, Bebe, Crocs, Family Christian Stores, GameStop, Gander Mountain, Guess, hhGregg, Michael Kors, Payless, Radio Shack, Rue21, Staples, The Limited, True Religion and Wet Seal.
