One man was taken into custody and two people were injured March 17 at Beachwood Place, prompting the mall to close for the remainder of the day, according to Beachwood Police Chief Gary Haba.
Haba said in a news release at 11 p.m. March 17 that there were two incidents at the mall on Cedar Road between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.
Two to three shots were fired outside the mall on the northeast side at about 3 p.m. and oa man was apprehended and another man was shot in the leg and was in stable condition at a hospital, he said.
Haba said it appears the two men knew each other and "the shooting resulted from an altercation between the two parties.
"No more than two to three shots were fired," Haba said. "One handgun and a large amount of cash were recovered at the scene."
The second incident was near the main entrance for "a report of a shot fired," he said.
He said a 17-year-old female was transported to a hospital, where she was treated and released.
Investigators were attempting to determine if the two incidents were related.
Police from multiple departments were on scene in the afternoon, including Beachwood, Cleveland Heights, Lyndhurst, Pepper Pike, Shaker Heights, University Heights, The FBI, Cuyahoga County Sheriff's Department and Ohio State Highway Patrol. Beachwood fire and rescue vehicles also were staged in the parking lot.
Additional resources arrived between 4 and 5 p.m. and officers outfitted themselves with helmets and rifles. K-9 units also were on scene.
Haba said police were going store to store to make sure everyone was accounted for.
Following the first shooting, the mall went into lockdown. Store employees pulled down the gates to their stores to keep people inside.
Mall security was in the parking lot going vehicle to vehicle asking people to leave the area and said the mall would not reopen March 17. They asked reporters to leave the premises and wait at the nearby Cleveland Clinic Risman Building facility on Cedar road for a news conference.
Law enforcement blocked all entrances to the mall and directed traffic in the area.
A person who identified himself as Michael, an employee of one of the mall store's, said, "There was a shooting, but not an active shooter (situation any longer). They apprehended the person and that's all we know. They haven't been telling anybody anything."
He said the incident began at about 3 p.m.
A valet employee said he showed up for work about 15 minutes earlier and was told the mall was closed.
"The mall's going to be shut down the rest of the day," he said. "That's all I can say."
Haba said he expected the mall to reopen March 18.
